Customizable Sensor Design for Advanced Room Dynamics Analysis

BACKGROUND - VergeSense Occupancy Sensor

VergeSense sought to create an aesthetically pleasing occupancy sensor that incorporated computer vision to analyze room configurations, occupant activities, and other data for room dynamics. The goal was to develop a solution that could offer variety for architectural interior designers and provide valuable insights for machine learning-based recommendations.

CHALLENGES

Our challenge was to design an aesthetically pleasing sensor that integrated advanced computer vision technology while catering to various architectural preferences. We needed to balance form and function, ensuring optimal performance of sensors and cameras without compromising privacy or visual appeal.

SOLUTION

We created an innovative, adaptable design featuring a shell-within-a-shell concept to accommodate light and dark environments while reducing tooling costs. Our design also incorporated unique solutions for sensor and camera integration, such as an inventive graphical element to obscure the camera's presence. The exterior design subtly alluded to the underlying machine learning technology, blending aesthetics with functionality.

USERS

The VergeSense Occupancy Sensor targets architectural interior designers, building managers, and facility operators who require an aesthetically pleasing solution for gathering room dynamics data and optimizing room configurations based on machine learning insights.

MY ROLE

As the Lead Creative Agency and Industrial Designer, I was responsible for overseeing all design and product development aspects of the VergeSense Occupancy Sensor project. This included conducting research, conceptualizing the innovative design, ensuring component fitment, CAD development, and managing client expectations throughout the project. I successfully balanced aesthetics, functionality, and user privacy to create a unique sensor solution for VergeSense.
