SOLUTION
We developed two Vocera Medical Communicator devices - one with a screen for visual information and navigation, and the Mini, a screenless option focused on voice interaction. Both devices featured voice-activated controls and discrete emergency buttons, with a focus on user comfort and safety through a holster, clip or lanyard. Remote testing and voice-enabled interaction scenarios allowed for iterative design improvements.
USERS
The Vocera Medical Communicator is primarily designed for doctors and nurses in healthcare settings. However, its versatile design has also found applications in other industries, such as retail, demonstrating its adaptability to various professional communication needs.
MY ROLE
As the Lead Designer, I played a pivotal role in the development of the Vocera Medical Communicator devices. I oversaw the hardware design, UX/UI elements, safety features, and created CAD prototypes. I also created the framework for the testing modules and initial UX testing with clinical staff. The groundbreaking work led to Vocera's Smartbadge being recognized as one of TIME Magazine's Top 100 Inventions of 2020 and contributed to the company's successful $3B acquisition.
Vocera Minibadge
The next generation Minibadge, a companion to smartphone with full voice UX, emergency call, updated global hardware UX that addresses the touchless future in health and home care.
Vocera Smartbadge
BACKGROUND
Vocera Smartbadge, a wearable device designed for healthcare professionals, faced challenges with its design, particularly with its proportions and weight. I was brought in to address these issues and improve the overall user experience, focusing on accessibility and functionality for users in emergency environments.
CHALLENGES
Inheriting an existing product with pre-established design discussions, the primary objectives were to refine the proportions and weight, optimize the user experience for various scenarios, and ensure seamless collaboration with engineering for a top-notch Voice UX product.
SOLUTION
As the sole designer, I conducted research on potential use cases and crafted multiple scenarios to enhance the device's usability. I improved the interface for better accessibility, ensuring efficient communication in high-stress environments. Additionally, I presented potential applications in retail settings, leading to a partnership with Nordstrom.
USERS
The primary users for Vocera Smartbadge are doctors and nurses who require reliable, hands-free communication devices in fast-paced healthcare settings.
MY ROLE
I took charge of producing content for approval channels, securing buy-in from upper management, and overseeing all design aspects, from refining the product's look to collaborating with engineering teams. Our efforts resulted in a Time Magazine Best Inventions award-winning product.
